Complicated Designs Stamp by Spikytastic Complicated Designs Stamp by Spikytastic
Sure, you can make a 5000x5000px reference for your character detailing every single minute thing in their design...
But that doesn't make them a good character.

They may have an extremely detailed design, but they're not a well-thought-out character for that.
In fact, really, when I see characters who have so much damn effort put into miniscule details, they tend to have incredibly dull personalities and whatnot.

Fellow Sparklesnark members will probably know exactly what inspired this, even if it's a teensy bit old by now.

I adopted a lot of characters over the years, and I soon found out that the detailed ones were amazing to look at but a pain in the butt to draw.
So they end up going to the one off or the even sadder short story pile.
My two main OC are very simple and easy to replicate for myself, yet a lot of people say they still look good. :)

I never give them a solid background as I consider them dolls to be placed into situations.
but I keep defining features like
(I designed her) Stripes is stubborn, and not very smart (average), and she controls stars and light.
(Adopted) Truth is usually calm, but gets very attached and looks up to Stripes like a sister, she controls spirits and can fly.
Look! I managed to basically describe my characters in a sentence or so.
Some people need to pull out a full length book and reference pack.

this is how I feel about most ocs made by popular artists. theyre just pretty designs with no personality. (Coughkawikucough)

Most of my more recent characters tend to have somewhat simple designs. I usually end up having some of the characters' personalities fleshed out in my head anyway. Although my recent ones have a certain look down, but they definitely still need a color scheme. :aww:

All my characters are associated with one or two colours, and their designs are quite simple, though they may have a few differences in design. But their backstories are interesting, and ties in with the overall plotline of their story.

True true true
In fact, one of my OCs is completely one color, though I've given his characteristics a lot of thought.

Complicated design does equate to a terrible time animating though. XP

Can people just not give their OC's simple designs anymore? Usually just a few unnatural colors is okay for me but I find it eye-gouging when people add shitloads of markings to their characters like this-zachpoopsrainbows.deviantart.c…

I have an actual 5000x5000px wallpaper with some characters lol.

Hey, just a brief critique request: do you think this character of mine has too much detail going on? [link]
Roos-Skywalker Featured By Owner Jul 19, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Detail is not a problem at all, Spikytastic refers to the personality of the character.
ThestralWizard Featured By Owner Jul 19, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I think they refer to the excessive amount of visual detail added to the character's concept.
DarkVioletCloud Featured By Owner Apr 21, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
I think the detail is necessary for the design. Maybe you can draw shots of her without as much detail, and add some on drawings that need the detail.

I like to think my fursona is a good character, even though she has one of the simplest designs known to man.

Aye, and it's sad, you know-- the vast majority of people are more impressed/interested by the mere appearance of something than what really matters, anyway. The average person has a very superficial mindset.
amymist Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010  Student General Artist
Even so I always feel bad when my characters don't have fancy designs. But those seem to be the ones that suck anyway. I.E. Meet Kat. She's a hyper conflicted demon. Her design pissed me off, so I covered her in chains. Viola. (One a side note, I haven't drawn her in a long time.)
ZerachielAmora Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Very true. *nod* I think the flipside is also true: if people see a character with a relatively simple design, they might tend to think that the character isn't that great.
Then again, all this comes down to a character-by-character basis.
Spikytastic Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010
True enough. A lot of people will tend to immediately call a character who has a shitton of miniscule details a good one, even if the character is, say, a magical rebel princess, which has been done exactly 7,972,005 times before.
They can be good, interesting characters, just as simple ones can, as you said (and of course, simple ones can also be insanely boring as well)-- it really is on a character-by-character basis.
ZerachielAmora Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I think people confuse good art for a good character a lot of the time.
