Edgy Remakes? Stamp

Description

Applies to sequels, remakes, reboots, etc.

Partially influenced by how I've seen people lauding Tim Burton for making a darker and edgier take on Alice in Wonderland.
Protip: if you want a darker and edgier Alice, play American McGee's 'Alice'. (I love that game on its own merits-- it may utterly rape one of my favorite stories in terms of wackiness and not being dark and gritty, but it's a good game and it carries itself well.)
Hell, Alice in Wonderland is one of the most 'darker and edgier'-ified stories ever. It's not original at all.

But you know what?
It's not better just because it takes a normal, maybe even light-hearted story, and makes it darker and edgier and grittier.

Sometimes?
It's fine the way it is. Yeah, sometimes the dark and edgy version is better (see: Gamera! But don't get me wrong, I love the originals, warts and all), but it's not good on those merits alone.

A lot of times, it seems like people want to take wholesome characters and make them dark and edgy just for the sake of making them dark and edgy.  I actually made a demotivational poster showing one extremely illogical example:

If people want to make art that really stands out, they should try putting normally dark/edgy characters in more wholesome situations/environments.
